Welcome to the website for the Town of Litchfield, Maine.  Litchfield is located 16 miles southwest of Augusta in southern Kennebec County.  The current estimate of population (in 2010) is 3,624.

Early settlement of the town began before the Revolutionary War and occurred around the ponds, lakes, and streams.  In 1793, the Town was organized as a political entity as Smithfield Plantation.  In 1795, the Plantation successfully petitioned the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became incorporated as the Town of Litchfield.

Rabies Clinic – Date Change

The Rabies Clinic planned for Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the Central Fire Station has been changed to Saturday, January 23, 2016, due to the predicted storm.

Transfer Station Winter Hours of Operation

Effective Friday, November 6, 2015, through Saturday, March 26, 2016, the Transfer Station will be observing the following hours (Winter Hours) of operation:

Fridays (beginning Fri., Nov. 6, 2015):  8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Saturdays (beginning Sat., Nov. 7, 2015):  8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Sundays (beginning Sun., Nov. 8, 2015):  NO LONGER OPEN

NOTE:  The Swap Shop will be closing for the Winter Season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2015.

New Transfer Station Summer Hours of Operation

Effective Friday, April 1, 2016, through Saturday, October 29, 2016, the Transfer Station will be observing the following hours (Summer Hours) of operation:

Fridays (beginning Fri., April 1, 2016):  10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Saturdays (beginning Sat., April 2, 2016):  10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Sundays (beginning Sun., Nov. 8, 2015):  NO LONGER OPEN

NOTE:  The Swap Shop will be open for the Summer Season at the start of business (10 a.m.) on Friday, April 1, 2016.

Road and Bridge Information:

Road Postings:  No Litchfield roads are posted at this time.

Road Work:  Libby RD paving project Phase 1 is complete.  Phase 2 will be completed in early spring, 2016.

Bridge Work:  Lunts Hill Road Bridge – This work has been completed.  The bridge is open to traffic.
