Welcome
to the web site for the Town of Litchfield, Maine. Litchfield is located
16 miles southwest of Augusta in southern Kennebec County. The current
estimate of population (in 2003) is 3,317.
Early
settlement of the town began before the Revolutionary War and occurred
around the ponds, lakes and streams. In 1793, the Town was organized
as a political entity as Smithfield Plantation, and in 1795, the Plantation
successfully petitioned the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became
incorporated as the Town of Litchfield.
